Wookey Jack Black Rye IPA

The label alone makes me think that this is a substantial beer.  The state bear of California and an English lion in a pugilistic confrontation, bold copy, black and gold, laid paper label, brewmaster autographs, ABV of 8.3%…yep, substantial.  Wookey Jack from Firestone Walker Brewing Company (Paso Robles, CA) is part of the Proprietor’s Reserve Series and a hell of a black ale.  Dark, dark brown with a frothy beige head, Wookey Jack has an earthy, hoppy, spicy nose with some malt at the back end.  The taste follows closely, with roasted malt and coffee notes.  Wookey (yes, we’re close enough that I can call it Wookey) laces the glass with a pattern that looks like the coastline of Nunavut and the Baffin Bay islands.  The long lasting bitterness is a testament to the Magnum, Citra and Amarillo hops.  Apparently there’s a little Wookey dust in there too.  Good stuff!
