Schmohz India Pale Ale

Despite the mildly cheezy label artwork, the Schmohz Brewing Company (Grand Rapids, MI) beers have been pretty good.  In fact, the cheezy labels may have appealed to my subconscious more than I would care to admit.  Did I just admit it?  Whatever.  Schmohz India Pale Ale flaunts its frothy white head, which refuses to fade into obscurity.  It pours orange and hazy, with a bouquet that is fairly well balanced for an IPA.  Obviously the hops dominate, and do so with a grassy, floral presence, but a good solid malt backbone helps to make this beer more enjoyable to those who are not into super-heavy hopping.  Still, despite the maltiness it has a thin-to-medium body and a 6.2% ABV that seems just right.  The finish has just the right amount of bitterness to it, and although I wouldn’t go as far as saying it is a subdued IPA, I’d definitely say it has a small-batch craft view vibe that makes it exciting enough for an IPA lover to appreciate.  It is very drinkable and not overbearing.  If you are beer shopping in western Michigan, look for a mixed six pack of Schmohz that includes an IPA, it’s worth it.
