Freigeist Abraxxxas

AbraxxxasWow, German craft beer.  I never think about German beer as anything but traditional regional beers or big name megabrews.  Freigeist (free spirit) Abraxxxas comes from an offshoot of a small Cologne brewery called Braustelle.  It’s a smoked Lichtenhainer weisse, which is a tradition eastern German sour wheat beer.  Abraxxxas pours a hazy, rusty yellow with a glorious white head.  The bouquet is also a little rusty with light wood smoke and some lemony tartness.  Yes, it’s tart tasting as well, but it is smooth and wonderfully smokey.  Sour, tangy and malty enough to balance.  Nothing in the flavor profile is too strong or overpowering.  That bit of lemon zest in the finish, as well as the smokey vibe, really make Abraxxas an enjoyable beer, and the mysterious connotations of the word abraxas are perfect for this unique and mysterious brew.
