Raspberry Tart

Raspberry Tart from New Glarus Brewing is a nice beer to celebrate the end of summer and the beginning of fall on this Labor Day weekend.  Raspberry Tart pours a deep garnet color with a mahogany cast, with a wispy, single layer head.  Initially there is a mediciney/cough syrupy smell to it, but that quickly fades to a more natural, more subtle sweetness.  It tastes tangy, tart and sweet, with a very natural raspberry flavor, followed by a touch of brown sugar and malt sweetness.  It’s refreshing and easy to gulp.  There is really no hop presence to note, and Raspberry Tart doesn’t really seem like beer at all.  It’s more like a cider or sparkling wine with more body, and at 4% ABV it is not overbearing.  As it warms, its flavor profile becomes more pronounced and more enjoyable for the subtleties of smell and taste that come out.

Probably not for everyone, but for me it is a good, once-in-a-while treat.  It comes in a 750ml corked bottle.  Consider sharing.  Or not.  You’re an adult, you’ll figure it out.
