Regional Gem Discovered in Chicago

German-style beer from Utica, NY.

German-style beer from Utica, NY.

Here’s one of the best beers I’ve never heard of.  Matt Brewing Company’s Saranac Adirondack Lager.  I got this beer as a give away from Hale’s booth at the ALA Convention.  By the way, vendors who give out all the free pens, bookmarks and stale candy, please take a cue form Hale.  Hale, makers of fine book cases since 1907.  Anyway, Saranac Adirondack Lager is a German-style, I think in the Dortmunder tradition, gold/amber and nicely carbonated, with good head retention and a bit of lacing.  The bouquet is well-balanced, a bit sweet, a bit spicy with a tinge of bitterness.  It is medium-bodied and smooth textured, and is a good, hearty beer that would wash down a good dose of spicy barbecue on a warm summer day.  If you see it, grab it.
