Black Toad Dark Ale

Well, it’s sure an appetizing name.  I almost didn’t give this beer a second chance, but found it tasted better after cold-aging a good year.  This came from Trader Joe’s, and anecdotal evidence says it may be contract brewed by Goose Island.  It’s deep brown but not quite opaque and produces average carbonation and a thin head.  The bouquet is chocolate and espresso, with hints of roasted nuts.  It’s surprisingly tart and tangy on the tongue, and the chocolate/espresso thing continues throught the tasting all the way through the finish.  I’d give it a “not bad”, but probably would not buy it again.  I did use a couple of bottles to boil the brisket in on St. Paddy’s and it was perfect for that application.
